Outreach Ministry at Saint John’s

Cathedral Choir School of Delaware

The Cathedral Church of Saint John is the home of the Cathedral Choir School of Delaware which is a ministry for girls and boys ages seven to seventeen. Each year, thirty to forty children participate in this nationally award winning program. Each Sunday from September to June, the children sing with the Cathedral Choir. At least half of these children are from the at risk community in which the Cathedral is located. All the boys and girls are on full scholarship and with this are able to receive:

• Vocal and instrumental music education.
• Assistance with their school work.
• A nutritious meal.
• Adult life mentoring.
• Opportunities for travel within the United States and internationally.

Brandywine Village Summer Camp

Each summer, for five weeks, the Cathedral sponsors a summer camp for children ages seven through eleven. Seventy children, along with their high school and adult advisors, spend eight hours a day for fivedays a week engaged in educational, social, spiritual and physical activities. Again, these children are from the at risk community around the Cathedral and for many of them “home alone” during the day would be the alternative. Several of the campers move into the Choir School program and thus continue their relationship with the Cathedral.

Adult Drop-In Center

The Cathedral’s outreach ministry also includes a weekly drop in center for adults. Assistance is provided for navigating the social service programs of city, county and state. Also, transportation assistance is provided for those seeking work and for those needing to get to medical appointments. Some of the folks who come to the center also come to Sunday services.

Funding, Volunteers

To fund these ministries, the Cathedral through its mission/ministry organizations raises about $250,000 each year, but volunteers are essential to make that money work.
