ABOUT OUR SHOP
The Next-to-New Shop is a 501(c)(3) division
of Cathedral Community Services with the
Cathedral Church of St. John. The shop has
been serving the Brandywine Village community
since 1961, and has contributed over $500,000
in outreach grants to the local community
and beyond. New and used donated items are
offered for resale at discounted prices.
Free clothing and household items are also
available to the community in support of
the Cathedral’s voucher program. The
shop is staffed entirely by volunteers, with
one paid part-time manager and a volunteer
board to oversee the operation.
Neighborhood Assistance and Outreach Grants
Every Thursday morning at the
Cathedral Church of St. John, hospitality is
extended to our neighbors in the form of food
vouchers to area pantries, as well as bus tickets,
and vouchers for use at the Next-to-New Shop.
The shop helps to fund the purchase of the bus
tickets, and allows our neighbors to shop free
of charge for clothing and basic household items
with the use of a voucher.
Traditionally, the
Next-to-New Shop has returned to the community
in the form of outreach grants monies earned
in excess of expenses. Over the years, those
grants have exceeded $500,000. By necessity,
our recent focus is directed more toward meeting
the needs of our neighbors through merchandise
vouchers and price reductions, than through
cash outlays to other community outreach organizations.
Volunteer Opportunities
include donations of time and items for
sale.
You can support our
ministry in several ways:
- Volunteer your time. We need you to help
us in the shop. Consider working at the front
counter with sales, or in the back room pricing
and sorting, or transporting donations. We
are also looking for someone with marketing
and graphic skills to promote this ministry
in the wider community.
- Donate quality household
and clothing items. Please bring your donations into the
shop during normal business hours. Look elsewhere
on this site for a list of items accepted
for donation.
- Encourage
your friends to volunteer
their time, donate, and shop.
- Give thanks with us for
this opportunity to serve the community,
and continue to pray for those who serve
and who are served.
- Call
Leslie Acker-Rowe at (302) 658-0020
to offer your help and support.
Donations
The Next-to-New Shop's merchandise is
all donated, not purchased or sold on consignment.
As a 501(c)(3) organization, all donations
are tax deductible. All donated items must
be in good condition and working order - please,
no items that are stained or torn, obsolete
or broken, or damaged by animals.
The shop is always in need of basic household
items to support our neighborhood assistance
program. The need is especially great for kitchen
and other household appliances, housewares,
and all types of linens. These items are in
great demand, and fly off the shelves. If you
are replacing basic household items such as
these, and the items you are replacing still
have life in them, please consider donating
them to the Next-to-New Shop.
