Dear Friends in Christ,
I continue to think of you as we prepare for a major transition for both the Cathedral congregation and the Choir School. Whether you have been part of the life of Saint John's for many years or just a few, you have been committed to its life and work and it has been meaningful for your life. While it has been recognized for at least the last decade that the day could come when there would no longer be a viable option to remain here at Concord and Market, the reality of its advent is no less painful. I have nothing but respect for you. You have not allowed grief and pain to diminish your resolve to continue and honor the story of Saint John's faithful witness to the presence of Christ, especially in the Brandywine Village. I repeat my offer to meet with you if talking about your concerns and/or feelings seems good to you.
By now you know that the Vestry has been researching the possibilities for the future of Saint John's, whether as an ongoing parish or through blendingwith another Episcopal parish. It is recognized that some of you will find a new parish on your own that meets your needs for worship and fellowship. Again, if I can be helpful in this process, please do not hesitate to call upon me. However, a number of you have indicated interest and willingness to move with your fellow members of Saint John's to a new location, particularly if the Choir School settles in the same place.
In researching the possibility for continuing the parish of Saint John's in the Brandywine Village area by sharing space with another congregation, the Vestry leadership has had conversations with both Hanover Presbyterian Church and Peninsula-McCabe United Methodist Church. The clergy and lay leadership of these congregations have been warm, caring, and sensitive to the situation in which Saint John's finds itself. They have gone out of their way to be accommodating in both financial and space usage matters.
The Vestry leadership is also meeting with the Rector and lay leaders of Saints Andrew and Matthew. And again, their warmth, concern and sensitivity are proving to be a blessing in these uncertain times. This conversation is focusing on the blending of Saint John's with Saints Andrew and Matthew in a way that will enrich all involved and increase the work of the Church in the city of Wilmington. While Saint John's would no longer be a stand alone parish, it would find a home that respects it heritage and welcomes its gifts and service to the community. Indeed, the initial conversation revealed how much the two parishes have in common and the potential for mutual growth.
You all received a survey asking for your sense of commitment to one or both of these possibilities. The Vestry understood that it would take a near unanimous show of such commitment for the first option (to continue Saint John's here in the Brandywine Village area) to be at all realistic. Such commitment has not been indicated. Of 55 surveys returned, there were 29 yes responses and 26 no. Thus we have a clear indication that there is not the viability, both in people and in finances, to make a go of a Saint John's parish in a shared space situation.
In response to the second option (blending with another Episcopal Parish, in this case Saints Andrew and Matthew) there were 39 yes responses and 16 no, with 3 responding maybe. This is indeed promising. Saint John's and Saints Andrew and Matthew are now meeting to see if a path forward can be established for blending the people and resources of the Cathedral with those of Saints Andrew and Matthew. This conversation might well also include seeking some way to keep the missionary presence of the Episcopal Church in the Brandywine Village, perhaps through a "store front" ministry.
If this joint effort of the two parishes seems to be bearing fruit by the February 26th Parish Gathering, it will be the focus of the agenda for that occasion. By that time the Choir School may well have reached a decision as well about its future home. Please remember, as of this date, nothing has been decided about Saint John's future except to give serious consideration to this option.
In cooperation with Bishop Wright, we are also working on a way to continue pastoral care for Cathedral members who are no longer able to leave home on a consistent basis to participate in worship on Sunday. If you want to make sure that you are included in this ministry, or that a family member or friend is, please contact the Cathedral Office at 302.654.6279.
The research for locating an appropriate place for the Garden of Praise continues. Every effort will be made to inform all who have the ashes of a family member(s) committed in the Garden about the details of the new location. Wherever that is, the Garden of Praise will be established so that it is identifiable as the memorial garden of the Cathedral Church of Saint John.
Finally, I remind you that Lent begins on the 22nd of February, Ash Wednesday. The schedule of services and programs is included in this edition of the CALL. My prayers and best wishes are with you all.
Faithfully,
Bill Lane

Darryl Roland Receives Award from the
Archbishop of Canterbury
Dr. Darryl Roland, former Choir Director of the Cathedral Church of Saint John, is one of only two American organists to ever receive the highest award bestowed by the Fellowship of the Guild of Church Musicians. During an Evensong on January 16 at Queen's Chapel, Marlborough Road at St. James Palace in London, the award was presented by Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury.
In an article written for Episcopal Digital Network, Giles Brightwell, a member of the Council of the Guild of Church Musicians was quoted as saying, " Darryl was honored for his outstanding work as director of the cathedral choir school at St. John's Cathedral, Delaware, which I observed first hand when I lived in the U.S. It was the only program of its kind for miles around and deeply inspirational." Brightwell had been the director of music at Immanuel Episcopal Church on the Green in New Castle, DE, before returning to the United Kingdom in 2009.
The article went on to say..."At the Cathedral Darryl led an intergenerational choir involving up to 40 children from varied backgrounds. They receive individual and group choral instruction, private piano lessons, leadership classes and various support services, icncluding homework help, tutoring, mentoring and nutrition and Zumba classes."
Congratulations Darryl!

EPISCOPAL RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT FARM
Thanks to the generosity of so many, we now have the funds in hand to pay for the Animal Farm through Episcopal Relief and Development. The cost is $1,460.00 and that provides for a cow, a goat, an ox and a plow. Additional good news is that your contributions came in over and above the cost of the Farm, so we will be providing additional support for individuals and families who will be blessed by your thoughtfulness.
