Dear Friends in Christ,
Later this month, I will be traveling to the Middle East to spend time in Jordan and Israel/ Palestine. The primary reason for the trip is the annual meeting of the North American Regional Committee for Saint George’s College in Jerusalem. Once every five years, this advisory and supportive organization for the College holds it annual meeting in Jerusalem. This year we are adding a side trip to Jordan.
This will be my twelfth trip to the Middle East since I first went there in 1987. Most of my time during these trips has been spent in Israel/Palestine, often called the Holy Land. My first trip was made out of curiosity. Since then I have returned because I experience a connection with the land and the story of the people of the land. It is of course the land of the Patriarchs/Matriarchs and Prophets, the land of Jesus and the first community of Jesus. This land is also identified by Islam as having been visited by Mohammed. The story of the people of this land has been informed by the words and deeds of all of these followers of the vision of God.
I also return because I promote Saint George’s College as a place from which others can experience the land and its people as they encounter the story of Jesus in its setting. In early 2009 I coordinated the participation of a group of Delawareans in a course at Saint George’s. I intend to coordinate the participation of a second group in October, 2011. The College is the Anglican Communion’s center for continuing education in the Holy Land. It is located on the Close of Saint George’s Cathedral in East Jerusalem. Men and women, lay and clergy from all over the world journey to Saint George’s to study, pray, and reflect as they come to know the land, its story, and its people.
The land of Israel/Palestine is about the size of the state of New Jersey. However, as small as it is, it has been a constant center for geo-political struggle. This struggle continues today and the quest for a just peace goes on. I have found it helpful in understanding events in the Middle East in general and Israel/Palestine in particular to have been in the land and amongst the people. In the midst of so much animosity and failure of leadership, it lifts one’s spirit to meet and relate with men and women; Jew and Arab; Christian, Jew, and Muslim who walk the talk of peace with justice.
If you are interested in looking into the possibility of “going up to Jerusalem” and walking the land of the Biblical story, let me know. Now is the time to get ready for 2011.
Yours,
Bill

CELEBRATION OF THE LITURGICAL MINISTRIES OF ACOLYTES AND CHORISTERS
On Sunday the 6th of June, at the 10:30 a.m. service, we celebrated and gave thanks for the ministry of our acolytes and choir and choristers. The women, men, young people, and children who serve in these ministries give of their time and talent to the glory of God as they join with all of us in praise and worship. The Cathedral is indeed blessed by their faithfulness and devotion.

An Invitation to Meet with the Vestry
The Vestry has agreed to devote its July 20th meeting to developing proposals and plans for one or two major fundraising projects for 2010-2011 and invites you to attend. Indeed the members of the Vestry look forward to your participation that evening. The work of fundraising is more than just a task for the Vestry; it needs the involvement of many of us. Your ideas, interest, and participation will be welcomed and are needed. The meeting will take place in the Great Hall beginning at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 20.

ANNUAL MEETING
The Annual Meeting of the Cathedral Church of Saint John will be held on the Fifth Sunday after Pentecost, the 27th of June, beginning with the Holy Eucharist at 9:30 a.m. There will be one service that day so that both congregations can attend the meeting.
The five members of Saint John’s who have agreed to fill the five vacancies on the Vestry are: Alice Coleman, Michele Eklund, Dan Hayes, Jane Runkle, and Anna Winslow. They will be elected at the Annual Meeting. Debbie Layton was elected by the Vestry to fill an unexpired term.

UPDATE ABOUT A FRIEND OF THE CATHEDRAL
Many of us remmber the Reverend James Robertson who was very much a part of the Cathedral’s life for several years. Jim is a vocational deacon, canonically resident in the Diocese of Pennsylvania. That Diocese has recently responded favorably to Jim’s request to be prepared for and ordained as a priest. The process leading to his ordination will take about seventeen months and includes a year’s residency at General Seminary. Prayers and best wishes for Jim as he enters this new vocation.
Date Change for Work on the Grounds
The Cathedral's Garden Guild will be working on the grounds, and in particular, spreading mulch on Saturday, June 19 beginning at 8:30 a.m. There will be something for everyone to do, so grab your gardening gloves, rakes and shovels and meet in the Cathedral kitchen for coffee and donuts to help plan the day.

Cecily
For many, many years, Cecily Sawyer-Harmon has been a caring and giving member and leader here at Saint John’s. She has been active in all aspects of the Cathedral’s life and has also served the Diocese and National Church.
Cecily is a member of the first class of vocational deacons ordained for mission and ministry in the Diocese of Delaware. Along with five other members of the class, she was ordained by Bishop Wright on the 5th of December, 2009. It was here at Saint John’s that Cecily was spiritually prepared to recognize her calling to ordained ministry. And, it was the people of the Cathedral who affirmed and endorsed this calling.
Cecily has accepted the invitation of Bishop Wright and Fr. Paul Gennett of Saint Thomas’ Church to be the Chaplain for Episcopal Campus Ministry at the University of Delaware. Indeed, she began this work even before her ordination. Because this Cathedral has been home for her, and because it was in at the beginning of her ordination process, it was agreed that for the first half of 2010 Cecily would function on a part-time basis as liturgical deacon for Saint John’s. After that, to more effectively carry out her ministry at the University, which is based at Saint Thomas’, she will focus her ministry at that parish.
Sunday the 6th of June was Cecily’s final Sunday as liturgical deacon for the Cathedral. That is an appropriate occasion for we will be celebrating liturgical ministries on that day. In the context of the Sunday liturgy, we will have the opportunity to honor her ministry at the Cathedral and to wish her God’s blessing for her work with the students at the University of Delaware.
